Christianity and the Arts (February 7 - 28)

This class is an overview of basic Biblical Christian concepts in the context of the arts. We will discuss the cultural mandate, imago dei, vocation, calling and responsibility through a Trinitarian perspective that acknowledges the creative roles of Father, Son, and Spirit. The class consists of visual presentations and group discussions regarding cultural renewal. There will be an art history presentation in week two.

This class is open to all who are interested in learning basic Christian doctrines through art-related themes. No experience in the arts is necessary.

Schedule: Sundays, February 7 through 28 from 12:10PM to 1:30PM. There will be no class on February 14.

Location: Hunter College, West Building (Southwest Corner of 68 & Lexington).

Childcare: Childcare is provided by RSVP only for children 3 and under. To make arrangements for childcare, please email Bethany at bethany.griffith@redeemer.com at least 4 days prior to the start of the class (Wednesday).

Registration is open. Limited enrollment. There is no fee for this course.

Feb 7 12:10PM - 1:30PM Creation, Culture, the Artist, and the Church God calls us to create culture. Artists are just one aspect of culture. Whether you are creating art or appreciating it, art connects God with His people.
Feb 21 12:10PM - 1:30PM Iconoclasm: A History of the Church and the Arts Art educator Brian Fee will present early Christian art up to the Reformation. He will discuss the purpose of art in the church, as well as the tensions between the church’s uses of imagery.
Feb 28 12:10PM - 1:30PM The Responsibility of the Artist We have a responsibility to carry out our God given gifts through vocation and service. We will also discuss how ethics are formed in the context of community. The Trinity is our relational paradigm.

Instructors:

Brian Fee
Brian Fee predominately teaches art and art history to NYC High Schoolers in Queens. As a painter he is currently is working on a series that investigates the tensions between the ephemeral and eternal. He is also a leader in CFW's art ministries.

Maria Fee
Maria Fee is the CFW arts ministry coordinator. She is a native New Yorker and married to Brian Fee, also an artist. They have three children and live in Queens. Maria received her M.F.A. in painting in the late eighties. Her struggles to integrate her Christian faith with art and culture led her to apply to seminary where she is working on a M.A.T.S. degree.
