DESCRIPTION:

LifeSkills4Kids (LS4K) is a program that supports the entire family during times of transition due to loss through death and divorce, stresses due to blended families and single parents, struggles due to family members with emotional and mental needs, and families who want their children to learn skills for emotional health. LS4K basically teaches kids how to live emotionally healthy lives while living in a broken, sinful world. Groups are facilitated by trained adults.

The goals for LS4K are the following:

  • LS4K is support and encouragement for kids during stressful times
  • LS4K is a place for kids to learn skills to cope with life circumstances
  • LS4K is a training program empowering parents to implement learned skills at home
  • LS4K reinforces an understanding of God as loving, heavenly Father who knows and cares about kids and parents

Age-level classes:

  • 1st to 3rd grades
  • 4th to 6th grades
  • Con-current Parent classes

Unit topics:

  • Facing my Feelings and Thoughts (Sept 14 – Nov 2) helps children identify and name their feelings, understand that “All their feelings are okay,” and learn healthy ways to express thoughts and feelings.
  • Living in My Family (Nov 9 - Jan 18; no classes on Nov 23, Dec 21 and 28) encourages children to see their family as primary place of belonging and support; but also reminds children that “There are no Perfect Families.” Children learn how be a positive impact on their families through their words and actions.
  • Growing through Change (Jan 25 – Mar 21; no class on Feb 22) teaches children how to grow through changes in life by identifying and managing the stages of loss and grief. Children learn that in life “Nothing Stays the Same Forever” and that children can trust in God’s plan for their lives even in difficult and confusing times of change.
  • Making Wise Choices (Mar 28 – May 23; no class on Apr 11) teaches children how to differentiate between wise and unwise choices by using a six-step process. By discovering that “They Always, Always have Choices,” children learn to seek advice from safe adults and principles from the Bible.

Each unit consists of 8 sessions, with the 8th session a “Family Fun Night”. Class sizes are limited. Classes are closed to new members after the 3rd session. New children may join at beginning of the next unit.
